Dance Company in Profit

Anchor
When most people think about a dance company, they usually assume it’s non-profit. But there are exceptions. And one of them is Momix. As Katherine Hayes report, without federal money, grants, or tax deductible contributions to rely on, Momix really has to hustle to survive.

Dancers are driven by many passions, love of movement, love of music, love of the spotlight. Moses Pendleton’s passion is unique: the urge to make dance that makes money.

If you look at it, Aerosmiths, Rolling Stones, I don’t think when they first started out, they thought about, well, maybe the first thing we should do is go to the NEA and see if we can get a grant to make music. We thought of ourselves as a kind of, a rock band.

Pendleton is the founder, director, choreographer and spirit behind Momix. One of only five for-profit dance companies in the country. In 1971, he took a college dance class at Dartmouth to recuperate from a ski racing injury, and never looked back.

We’re very messianic about our theater, because my God, we might not have to go to business school, we might not have to do 12 years, studying biology, you know, maybe we can do this.

He spun off Momix in 1980.

It was named after a milk supplement for veal calves, so I felt comfortable with the name because it touched on my agro-past. And I always thought it was something you sprinkled on Polopulus to make it crawl a little faster. We thought we could make a show, people would like it. And if they liked it, they would pay to see it.

And pay they do, at 40 bucks a head in New York. Per performance the company charges over 17,000 dollars plus expenses. Momix has an operating budget of more than one million dollars. But it disappears quickly, between travel expenses, production cost and 25 dancers’ pay and benefits. John Munger, one of the only record keepers’ of dance research in America, says Momix is unique.

There is a fair amount of dance done in the country, that is for profit. Las Vegas shows, cruise ships, this sort of thing, but concert dance companies, where there’s a presumption of some kind of high art, those are almost invariably not for profit. And as far as I know, Momix is the only one that has a really significant budget size that is a concert dance company working as a for-profit.

And in hard times, Momix can’t rely on tax deductible contributions, or any of the other perks that are not-for-profits get. Pendleton has almost literally put his life on the line, mortgaging his house several times to keep Momix afloat. But he’s never hard up for ideas. What inspires Pendleton? Almost anything.

You see this little ski hat that we picked up?

A hat. A hula-hoop. Even an Ab-roller. The roots of his creativity. Moments of meditation in the center spokes of the sunflowers at his home in Connecticut.

I take an environmental, psychological approach to creativity, the light, the water, the subtle differences in temperature, might make the difference between something that’s worth nothing and something that’s a million dollars.
