我喜欢你们的语言亲切而大方;

多少天我曾在地图上寻找你的方向;

那是中华民族的骄傲和希望;

到处都有岛屿和暗礁隐藏;

也视自己的国土和生活方式至高无上;

昨天我们还很陌生,今天却欢聚一堂;

Lines Dashed off at Greenwich Village
Poetry Reading
To American Poet-Friends at New York
(Frank) Huang Xinqu

Homeland of Langston Hughes and Whitman,
I've come to visit you across the Pacific Ocean.
Do you know me, my American poet-friends?
I am a son of the Yangtze River.

Thank you for your sweet smiles,
Thank you for your warm reception.
I've brought you the Chinese poets' greetings,
I've brought you tales from an ancient continent.

Greenwish Village, surrounded by Manhatten,
For days I've searched in a map for your location;
You were so small yet far and distant,
But you are so close to me at this moment.

I feel sad to read O'Henry's The Last Leaf *
But I cheer for the nice sunshine this morning;
I'm so happy to meet you at this poetry reading,
Please accept my best wishes for this occasion.

Have you ever seen the Great Wall of China?
It is the pride and hope of the Chinese nation.
However,there is another invisible Great Wall,
That is nothing but the poetry of every nation.

China and America are separated by big oceans,
And there're islands and hidden reefs in between;
As long as we have sails,oars,pilots and sailors,
We may conquer the billows to link up our two lands.

We are living in an ever-changing global village,
The Internet has made our Earth much smaller.
Writers and translators are our sailors and pilots,
Through them we may link up our inner world.

I know every nation loves its own culture,
Everyone loves his own lifestyle and native soil;
Only when we know each other better through poetry,
Can the Pacific and Yangtze become closer in our soul!

Do you know me? I'm a son of the Yangtze River,
We were strangers but now we may be good friends.
Since I've made your acquaintance right here,
Can I remain silent and not sing a song with emotion?

* The Last Leaf is a short story by O'Henry.It is written about an old American artist,who lived in Greenwich Village with poor living quarters for writers and artists. Unfortunately    he died of T.B.,but his masterpiece entitled The Last Leaf still remained fresh and vivid on the wall forever in the chilly winter wind out there! -Tr.
