【模拟训练参考作文51】Private Cars Should Not Be Encouraged.
The number of private cars is on the rise in our country. Some people thin
k that private cars should be encouraged. Others argue that private cars should
not be encouraged. I think that too many private cars may create endless problem
s though they bring much convenience and comfort.
First, cars often produce air pollution and fill the cities with unbearabl
e noises. Second, Most of the important cities in the world suffer from traffic
congestion. In fact any advantage gained in comfort is often cancelled out in ci
ty by the frustration caused by traffic jams, endless queues of cars crawling bu
mpe
r to bumper through all the main streets. Third, to own a private car in China w
ill not only cost you a fortune, but also bring you all kinds of trouble: gettin
g a license plate, keeping the machine in good maintenance, finding a parking pl
ace at night, etc. What is worse, cars are the main cause of traffic accidents.
All over the world thousands upon thousands of people are killed or injured ever
y year. Traffic accidents caused by cars not only bring deaths and injury, but a
lso make people suffer mentally and physically. In addition, our country has a v
ery large population. If everyone had a car, all roads would be crowded with car
s!
Therefore, I think the number of private cars should be limited. We should try t
o find a safer means of transport that will bring joy and comfort rather than in
jury and death.
【模拟训练参考作文52】On Unpunctualness
[ST][WT5BZ〗〖HTK〗
Wisdom in the mind is better than money in the hand.
胸中有知识,胜于手中有金钱。
A punctual person is in the habit of doing something at the exact time arr
anged beforehand, and is never late in keeping an appointment. An unpunctual per
son, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. He is a
lways in a hurry and in the end loses both time and trust.
As a proverb says, “Time flies never to be recalled.” This is true. If
we lose something, we may find it again. But lost time can never be regained. In
fact, time itself is life. So wasting others’ time is the same as taking away t
ime from others’ life.
Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointment is a sign of disrespect towa
rd others. If a person is invited to a dinner and arrives later than the appoint
ed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting. This is a great discourtesy towa
rd both the guests and the host.
Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful to one’s duty. Imagine how it would be
if those who are entrusted with important tasks fail to be at the right place at
the appointed time. A man known to be habitually unpunctual is seldom trusted b
y others. And he will lose friends.
【模拟训练参考作文53】Reading Selectively or Extensively
Different people have different views on reading. Some believe that reading sele
ctively is more beneficial. They have several reasons for this. First, as countl
ess books are published each year due to the development of science and technolo
gy, one’s time and energy do not allow them to read all of them. Second, it is u
n
necessary for one to read so many books which neither interest them nor have any
thing to do with their work. Besides, reading selectively may enable one to focu
s on books related to their aim or work. What’s more, there are many bad or misl
eading books harmful to people’s minds. Therefore such books should be avoided.
On the other hand, others insist that reading extensively does more good.
They say in an age of knowledge explosion, only by reading extensively can one k
eep himself wellinformed. Secondly, a widelyread man usually possesses more
wi
sdom. Thirdly, a variety of books can surely broaden one’s vision, enrich one’s
experience and make one’s life more colorful.
Wise men learn by other men’s mistakes, while fools by their own.
聪明人从别人的错误中吸取教训,愚蠢人则从自身错误中吸取教训。
It is obvious that both reading selectively and extensively have their advantage
s. I think books should be classified into two classes: books to be read selecti
vely and books to be read extensively. As Bacon said, “Some books are to be tas
t
ed, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.” Books to b
e
tasted should be read extensively, while other kinds of books should be read se
lectively. Thus, we should read books selectively in our field, and read extensi
vely in other fields.
【模拟训练参考作文54】How to Give Up Smoking
Wit without learning is like a tree without fruit.
光有才智无学识,如同果树不结实。
It is generally believed that smoking is extremely harmful to the health.
There are great many cigarette smokers especially among young people in our coun
try. People have realized that measures should be taken urgently to reduce the n
umber of smokers and therefore to protect the health of passive smokers from bei
ng affected.
First of all, smokers should be convinced of the great harm done to the health o
f smokers by smoking. It is said that cigarettes contain nicotine that hurts the
respiratory system. Scientists have confirmed that smoking is the main cause of
lung cancer. The World Health Organization declares diseases linked to smoking
kill at least 2,500,000 people each year. Researchers say that pregnant women sm
okers run the risk of having deformed babies. Smoking is next to slow suicide an
d gentle murdering. In addition, smoking pollutes the air. Therefore smokers the
mselves should be willing and determined to get rid of the habit though some hav
e been addicted to it for a long time.
Second, smokers should be aware that it is impolite and immoral to smoke in publ
ic places, for it does a lot of harm to the health of nonsmokers. Passive smoker
s usually feel sick and suffer from headache.
Third, governments should take some measures to prohibit smoking in public place
s like cinemas, buses and railway stations by law. Reducing the number of smoker
s and prot
ecting nonsmokers should be an important task and responsibility of the governme
nt. Those who violate the law should be punished severely. Besides, advertisemen
ts for cigarettes should be limited or abolished.
The abovementioned measures may guarantee fruitful result if taken properly.
【模拟训练参考作文55】On How to Be a Good Student
Different people have different opinions about how to be a good student. A
s for me, a good student should be measured in terms of at least three basic qua
lities.
First, a good student should be diligent in his study. He should spend mor
e time learning what is required at school. As the proverb goes, “Diligence is
t
he mother of success.” All people of great accomplishments are known for their
d
iligence. Only by working hard will one be able to face the fierce competition i
n future. For instance, Edison usually worked twenty hours a day. Second, a good
student should have the virtues of honesty, kindness, and a sense of responsibi
lity. These virtues are indispensable even in such a materialistic society. Lack
of these virtues, our society would be in terrible disorder. Third, good health
is essential for a good student. Anyone without good health can hardly achieve
anything great even if he is intelligent. Therefore, a good student should do ph
ysical exercise regularly in order to keep healthy.
In brief, a good student should possess the above three qualities no matte
r how the criteria are changing.
Youth looks forward and age backward.
青年展望未来,老年眷念过去。
【模拟训练参考作文56】My View on Homestay Program
A foreign student who plans to go to the United States must have some defi
nite goals in mind. For the student who wants to improve his English quickly and
learn about American customs firsthand, it may be favorable for him to live wit
h an American family. There may be one or two disadvantages to this arrangement;
however, I believe that there are far more advantages.
First of all, some minor disadvantages to living with an American family i
nclude both a lack of privacy and little opportunity to be independent. For exam
ple, the student may find that the family expects him to join them in group acti
vities such as watching television and going on picnics. At times, however, he m
ight enjoy staying in his room to read or to write letters to his family and fri
ends. Another drawback involves the possibility that the family may treat the st
udent like a child. For instance, the parents may want to decide who his friends
will be and where he will go during his leisure time away from home.
However, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. By taking part in
a homestay program, the student has an excellent opportunity to learn about Amer
ican customs. He will find out how to behave in different social situations such
as parties and ceremonies and how to dress on these occasions. Also, he will le

arn about many other aspects of the American way of life, such as the way school
s are run in the United States. With a family close by, he can ask questions abo
ut attendance rules and school costs. The family will make sure that he becomes
acquainted with this new way of life, and soon he will feel at home.
Another advantage is that the student is in an ideal environment to improv
e his English. For example, each time he has a conversation with someone in the
family, this native speaker can help him with his pronunciation and grammar. May
be the children in the family can help him with his homework, too. But the most
important thing is that he will be surrounded by English most of the time during
his stay in the US.
Although I agree that there may be a couple of disadvantages to living wit
h an American family, I feel that the advantages are more obvious. In a homestay
program, the student can learn about American customs in the most natural way p
ossible. In addition, he will find himself in an atmosphere in which his English
will certainly improve. In my opinion, these are the two most important goals f
or him to consider, and living with an American family is the best way to achiev
e them.
【模拟训练参考作文57】My View on the Telephone
The telephone has been the most popular and convenient means of communication. E
ver since its invention, telephones have proved people too much convenience and
help. They have become so popular and useful that people may find it hard to liv
e without them.
Telephones have been useful in many ways. First, by dialing the number, people c
an obtain and send information immediately. In modern times when time is money,
people need timely information for their private or business matters, the teleph
one is the best device for this purpose. In an office, the telephone seems to be
the most common and most important device. If you want to make an appointment w
ith someone, just phone to get it arranged. Secondly, superior to letters, on th
e phone you can hear the voice at the other end; you can convey your ideas and f
eelings to each other.
However, a telephone may be troublesome. Just imagine you are sleeping soundly w
hen you are waked up from your pleasant dream by the telephone ring, you would f
eel annoyed. For another example, the telephone may ring when you are watching a
football game on TV. Another disadvantage is that constant interruption by tele
phone may distract your attention from your work. Sometimes for some reasons, yo
u just cannot dial through. Nevertheless, all these are trivial compared with th
e convenience a telephone offers.
Work while you work, play while you play.
该干时干,该玩时玩。
【模拟训练参考作文58】Television and People’s Behavior
It is true that nowadays most people spend their evenings watching TV a
t home. They choose their favorite programs either to entertain themselves or to
get some information. Obviously television plays an important role in our daily
life.
First of all, television widens our horizon. There are various TV programs
concerning the worldwide affairs. For instance, the program The World of Anim
al
s fascinates both children and adults. It is fascinating to see animals of var
ious kinds. The program Tell Like It Is is both instructive and entertaining
.
Second, there are many programs for entertaining. After a day of hard work
, people usually turn on TV to watch some entertaining programs only to get rela
xed.
Furthermore, as a convenient communicational tool, TV programs help people
in the areas of social work, education, advertisements and so on. People can re
ceive education by watching ETV without leaving home. Lectures on computer scien
ce, business, and many other subjects are very helpful. Advertisements on TV ser
ve as a guide for people to do shopping.
But on the other hand, there are some complaints about television. For exa
mple, some children spend a lot of time watching TV, forgetting their homework a
nd outdoor activities. Besides, some children get shortsighted by watching TV to
o much.
In my opinion, we should spend our spare time sensibly only on some progra
ms either instructive or entertaining. Children should have their hobbies and ou
tdoor activities besides watching certain programs.
【模拟训练参考作文59】The Harmful Effect of Television on Children
Many educators and parents are now worried about the harmful influence of
television on the television generation—children who are growing up watching
it.
Television has great negative influence on children. First, television has
deprived children of their ability to form mental pictures in their minds, i.e.
, by watching TV frequently children fail to develop their imaginative and creat
ive power. As a consequence, they have difficulty in understanding a simple stor
y without visual illustrations. Second, television occupies too much of children
’s spare time. They no longer have enough time for their hobbies or outdoor amus

ements. They become lazy instead of going out. Besides, they become nearsighted
by watching TV long at a time. Third, children become passive viewers. It cuts c
hildren from the real world. The worst thing is that while watching TV, they are
often exposed to scenes of violence and sex. They may come to regard them as a
matter of course. As a result, they may imitate the harmful acts they see on TV,
which may lead to juvenile delinquency.
Therefore, due to so much unfavorable impact of television on children, pa
rents should avoid harmful programs, and limit the time they spend watching T
V.
【模拟训练参考作文60】On How to Use Time
Some students spend much of their free time on recreation. Others focus much on
their studies even in their spare time. It seems to me that the most urgent task
for us is to make full use of our college days on study. People often say that
time is money. But in my opinion, time is even more precious than money. Why? Be
cause when money is spent, we can earn it back. However, when time is gone, it w
ill never return. This is the reason why we must value time.
It goes without saying that we should spend our precious time on study. So
, even every minute of our four years here at the university is extremely import
ant. For young people, time appears especially precious, for youth is the best t
ime for learning. Besides, being young is the greatest treasure for us students.
Only by learning and developing the skills we need can we brave the fierce comp
etitions in future. Hence, the best policy for us now is to devote ourselves to
our study. But it is a great pity that many students ignore the importance of ti
me. They spend their spare time playing games, and watching TV. They do not real
ize that to idle away one’s life amounts to killing oneself.
In a word, we have every reason to spend most of our time on study. Only i
n this way will we have nothing to regret in future. Besides, do not waste your
precious time, for youth, once spent, will never come again.
