TOO MANY GRADUATES /

Do you actually need a degree? That’s the question being asked in Britain this week, after a report for the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development announced that 58% of graduates are working in jobs that don’t actually require a university education.  One in 12 non-graduate jobs are currently filled by degree-holders, prompting suggestions that many teenagers would be better off starting work at 18 rather go to university, particularly when 45% of student loans are left unsettled, as recipients do not earn enough to pay them off.

Whether or not you really need a degree for your job, I’d still recommend it – university qualifies you for more than a job!

SHOW ME THE MONEY /

Obviously there are still careers where going to university pays off: and finance is one of them. Data gatherers Emolument have worked out the best 15 universities in Europe to guarantee a well-paying job – and 7 of them are in the UK. Next time you go out, drinks are on those finance graduates from London Business School, who earn £78,000 on average. And don’t dismiss your pals from Cambridge – they’re likely to be on £54,000.

Is there still time to switch degree courses?

Frankie:

ON THE PILL /

Feeling stupid? There’s a pill for that. A huge rise in the consumption of drugs designed to increase your intelligence looks set to take place, after researchers at Harvard and Oxford found that Modafinil is the world’s first safe ‘smart drug’. Students have been taking Modafinil, prescribed for narcolepsy, for years, as it is known to increase focus and cognition, and enhance memory. The researchers concluded that while there is no information on long-term consumption, there seems to be few problems with short-term usage.

SHORTHAND SHAKESPEARE /

To emoji or not to emoji, that is the question. So reckons John Moores graduate Jamie Rector. The graphic design student has added to the heated debate over the use of emojis as a language by translating Shakespeare into smiley faces. Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Hamlet all received the emoji treatment. Turns out Hamlet’s “Alas poor Yorick, I knew him well” can be reduced to … Rector says critics who claim she is dumbing down the language “need to just get with the times.”

EARNING YOUR DEGREE /

Think you’re working hard at university? Think again if you’ve not got a part-time job on the side. A study from insurance firm Endsleigh has found that 77% of the 4642 university students surveyed are also in paid employment – with 14% working full-time in term-time, holidays, or both. These undergraduate workers earn an average of £100 a week, with 56% claiming to do so out of necessity after under-estimating the cost of further education. Even with extra income, 53% of students said that they had to rely on their parents for support whilst studying.

If you’re going to university just to put off starting work, think again…
