Israel will free 500 Palestinian prisoners in a good-will gesture Monday. This is part of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's agreement with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in Egypt earlier this month.
Early Monday morning, a bus containing150 Palestinian prisoners set off from an Israeli military prison in southern Israel near the border with Egypt.
The bus passed through checkpoints in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian prisoners were set free in the Palestinian-controlled region.
Another 350 Palestinian prisoners will be released later on Monday.
All the prisoners released had to sign an agreement, promising never to attack Israel again.
Israel has promised to release 400 more prisoners within the next three months.
