A group of people have opened a controversial institute in Shanghai that is modelled on the education system of ancient Chinese family schooling to teach children.

The full-time school, Meng Mu Tang, has 12 students between four and 10 years old. About 80 per cent of the curriculum involves self-study and the recitation of Chinese classics, such as Confucius and Mencius. Also mixed in are some English works by Shakespeare. Parents of the students are happy with the schooling.

According to the spokesman of the institute, Meng Mu Tang aims to educate children in a way that will embrace the renaissance of traditional Chinese culture. He says the current education system doesn't attach importance to traditional culture, and this is not good for the nation's understanding of life.

But the Shanghai education authorities have ordered the private school to stop operations immediately. Officials say that the institute's curriculum doesn't comply with State education law and they doubt whether it provides children with a solid education.
