The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward."

Pacific salmon are born in fresh water, but spend most of their adult lives in saltwater. As adults, the only time they return to fresh water is to spawn (in the same stream where they were hatched). Soon after spawning, the adult Pacific salmon will expire.k83中国英语学习网

晚餐迟了(Late For Dinner)

Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. This was the fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often?

The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand.

"Jack? Jack from church?" the cop said. Jack sunk further into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. Imagine a cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow.

Jumping out of the car, Jack approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform. "Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."

"Hello, Jack." No smile.

"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."

"Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.

"What'd you clock me at?" "Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?"

"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

"Please, Jack, in the car."

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window. The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad. Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?

A tap on the window jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand. Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks," Jack said.

Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost? Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke? It was certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

Dear Jack,

Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when she was killed by a car. You guessed it 一 a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters. All three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until I go to Heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful, Jack. My son is all I have left. k83中国英语学习网

k83中国英语学习网

You took your coat off and stood in the rain
You were always crazy like that,? I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You were always the mysterious one with dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive, but too cool to care
Then you stood in my doorway, with nothing to say

Besides some comment on the weather
Well in case you failed to notice, in case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you, this is me down on my knees
These foolish games are tearing me apart
Your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart You were always brilliant in morning

Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
You philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar You'd teach me of honest things

Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
So I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line I must've gone off track with you
Excuse me, think I've mistaken you for somebody else

Somebody who gave a damn, somebody more like myself
These foolish games are tearing me apart
You're tearing me, tearing me, tearing me apart
Your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart,? You took off your coat and stood in the rain
You were always crazy like that
