“The writing on the wall”常见于新闻报道或文学读本中，指的是“a sign or warning of impending disaster（迫在眉睫的凶兆、不祥之兆）。其渊源和“占卜”有关系，可追溯到《旧约?但以理书》。《旧约》中记载：
古巴比伦国王Belshazar（伯沙撒）在宫殿里设宴纵饮时，忽然看到一个神秘的手指在王宫墙上写着看不懂的文字，后来，国王听了犹太预言家Daniel（但以理）的解释才明白，墙上的字表示“大难临头”。如预言所示，伯沙撒当夜被杀，新国王由玛代人大利乌继任。
由于这个“身死国王”的典故，the finger on the wall（墙上的手指）或the writing on the wall（墙上的文字）常和动词see或read连用，用来形容“不祥之兆”。

Multiple theories exist as to how these massive statues—thought to represent the spirits of the islanders' ancestors or chiefs—were moved into position miles from where they were quarried. Scientists have also long puzzled over why production of the statues ceased so abruptly, with hundreds left lying half-finished in the quarry. One theory is that deforestation, swelling population, and the intense dedication of resources to building and transporting the monoliths led to the collapse of the islanders' society and economy.

赤足天使(The Barefoot Angel)



Barefoot and dirty, the little girl just sat in the park and watched people go by. She never tried to speak, she never said a word. Many people passed, but not one person glanced her way. No one stopped, including me.

The next day I decided to go back to the park. Right in the very spot she was yesterday, she sat perched on high, with the saddest look in her eyes.

As I began walking towards her, I could see the back of the little girl's dress indicated a deformity. I figured that was the reason the people just passed by and made no effort to care.

As I got closer, the little girl slightly lowered her eyes to avoid my intent stare. I could see the shape of her back more clearly. It was grotesquely shaped in a humped over form.

I smiled to let her know it was okay, I was there to help, to talk. I sat down beside her and opened with a simple "hello." I asked the girl why she was so sad. The little girl looked at me and said, "Because I am different."

I immediately said, "That you are!" and smiled.

The little girl acted even sadder, she said, "I know."

"Little girl," I said, "you remind me of an angel, sweet and innocent."

She looked at me and smiled slowly, she stood up and said, "Really?"

"Yes, dear, you're like a little guardian angel sent to watch over all those people walking by."

She nodded her head and smiled, and with that she spread her wings and said, "I am. I'm your guardian angel," with a twinkle in her eye.

I was speechless.

She said, "And when you began thinking of someone other than yourself, my job here was done."

With that my life was changed dramatically.

很“爵士”：至高无上的爱

浅谈“Sophisti-pop”

该如何形容这种音乐？淡淡的流行味道，丝丝的爵士情怀…… 只是，虽“流行”，它却没能成为流行的主角；虽“爵士”，它从未得到正统爵士迷的吹捧。行走在主流音乐和非主流音乐的交界处，“Sophisti-pop”完美地融合了电子、爵士、摇滚、R&B等各色音乐元素，成为更轻柔、更为大众接受的“爵士乐”。因为它的流行，人们说Sophisti-pop“很爵士”；也因为它的“很爵士”，人们更喜欢把Sophisti-pop列为爵士的一种，称它为“轻爵士”。

Sophisti-pop源于上世纪80年代，与正统爵士乐相比，它缺乏前者的厚重、深沉和大气，也没有爵士乐特有的“即兴”成分。你说它精致也好，矫揉也罢，总之，20世纪80年代特有的音响合成，让Sophisti-pop和着美妙多变的萨克斯风一路优雅走来，那么柔滑、那么甜美。

数点Sophisti-pop艺人，“Sade”（莎黛）几乎成了这种“很爵士”音乐优雅、慵懒、性感的代名词。Sade发音[shar-day]，首先是一个乐团，以主唱Sade的名字而命名。当年，唱片公司为Sade出版第一张专辑时，在唱片封套上特别加上了歌手名字的注音[shar-day]。JsN中国英语学习网

“端庄、文雅又不失异国风情”，这就是我们看到的Sade，出身于尼日利亚，身上流淌有英国和非洲两种血统。她的嗓音有些像黑人灵歌手，但她的音乐却是英式的点到即止，带着彬彬有礼的疏离，一切都是浅尝辄止的。如果问Sade的歌像什么，那只能用一些形容词来概括：飘逸、华丽、柔和、性感，时而如汹涌的暗流，时而如隔了层纱般暧昧……

自1984年以首张专辑“Diamond Life”《钻石人生》进军国际乐坛以来，Sade便以其优雅的气质、低冷、慵懒且富磁性的嗓音，及融合爵士、灵魂、蓝调与拉丁等风格，在乐坛独树一帜。歌曲“Your love is king”（《至高无上的爱》）为莎黛 1984年啼声之作，正是凭借该曲，Sade确立了其跨世纪不衰的偶像地位。
