It took almost 6,000 years after the invention of the wheel for someone to finally put two of them together and make a bicycle.

The first bike, invented around 1817 by Baron Karl von Drais of Germany, looked like something Fred Flintstone might have used. It didn't have pedals, so a rider had to push his feet against the ground to move it along. Needless to say, it was not very useful.

Several years later a Scottish blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan added pedals, thus creating the first true bicycle. It was not very successful, however, because it was heavy and very hard to move. A rider had to pump the pedals, sort of like a paddle boat.

Around 1860, two Frenchmen, Pierre Michaux and his son Ernest, made some improvements and created a bicycle called the velocipede (''fast foot''). Although it became popular, people called it the ''boneshaker'' because its wood and metal wheels and frame made for an extremely uncomfortable ride over cobblestones.

Around 1870, a very strange-looking bike appeared. It had a huge front wheel that stood as high as five feet. One rotation of the giant wheel took the bicycle a much greater distance. The pedals were attached directly to the front wheel, which was made of solid rubber with long spokes.

Although this made for a smoother ride, the bike was really dangerous. The rider sat up so high that if he hit a rock or had to stop suddenly, he would be dumped forward, right on his head. And nobody thought about wearing helmets back then!

An English bike maker named J.K. Starley produced the first safety bike around 1885. It looked a lot like today's bike: Its wheels were both the same size. This made it much safer.

In the last decade of the 19th century, there were many more improvements made to the bicycle, including the chain-and-sprocket system, gear shifting, better brakes and air-filled rubber tires. Bicycling was never more popular than it was during this period. Production of bicycles in America rose from roughly 200,000 in 1889 to 1 million in 1899.

The invention of the automobile caused many adults to lose interest, but for kids the bike remains the best form of transportation.8vX中国英语学习网
