As soon as the gold was all gone, these towns went to the dogs almost overnight. Everybody moved away, and these places are ghost towns now, with the wind whistling through the empty houses and shops.

At an exhibition of the world's best swordsman, the third-place fencer took the
stage. A fly was released, and with an arc of his sword he cut the fly in half.
The crowd cheered. Then the second-place man sliced a fly into quarters. A hush
fell in anticipation of the world's greatest swordsman.
His blade came down in a mighty arc - but the insect continued on its way! The crowd was aghast. The greatest swordsman had missed his target completely, yet he continued to smile.
"Why are you so happy?" someone yelled. "You missed!"
"Ah," replied the swordsman, "you weren't watching very carefully. They fly lives, yes - but he will never be a father."

 "In America" is a movie about believing.

Set in the early 1980s and based on Irish director Jim ("My Left Foot") Sheridan's experiences as a film student at New York University, this film evokes feelings of hope. These include the hopes of the immigrant struggling for a better future, the hope of the artist for recognition and the hope of the guilty for redemption.

If he can throw five baseballs into a small hole, he will take his pick of the prizes and get back all the money he has spent. Johnny agrees, and then finds himself in over his head, as he throws one baseball after another, each more expensive than the last, toward the hole.
Four balls up, and with his rent money at stake, Johnny is ready to cut his losses and walk away. Sarah, however, places the family's last dollar on the final ball, one chance on which their whole world rides. She believes in Johnny.
"In America" has a message about the transformational power of faith and absolution, and a conviction that love can heal the pain of loss. |
