case。Basket的意思就是"篮子"。比如说，要是一个人在一次事故中失去了四肢，他就变得毫无能力来料理自己的生活，只能让人家把他放在一只篮子里抬来抬去。这种毫无能力和希望的情景就是basket case的意思。Basket case经常被用来形容那些很穷的国家，它们的人民饥寒交迫，毫无希望。有时候，也可以用半开玩笑的口气来指个别人，就像下面这个人。他正在找工作，刚刚到一个公司去面谈回来：

Built on 117 small islands, 150 canals and 409 bridges, Venice is divided into six quarters: San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Santa Croce, Cannaregio and Castello. The city's "main street" is the Grand Canal, which passes each of the districts as it twists along the length of Venice.
The best way to get inside a city's skin is to walk around. So I surf through its numerous lanes and bylanes一callis as they are called. From the Rialto Bridge, I walk along the Merceria一 Venice's chief shopping area.
I then headed for the Piazza San Marco that holds the city's main attraction一the Cathedral of St. Mark. The Basilica is architecturally Byzantine in design with five vaulted domes set in a Greek cross. The Basilica remains open daily from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but the times change with the seasons. Standing to the left is the 15th century bell tower, Torredell Orologio, popularly known as St. Marks Campanile, from where Galileo first demonstrated his telescopic observations.
Another worthy sight is the famous Doges Palazzo, which displays an extravaganza of Gothic arches. The outside is made of decorative gold-plated relief and colored glass panels, while the inside has an expensive chandelier outlook.
Utterly exhausted but happily contented, I sit on a jetty to watch the orange sun gently lowering itself tracing a golden path in the gray canal water. |
