Enchanting Ella[麻辣公主魅力无法挡]kRD中国英语学习网
"Ella Enchanted" is a charming fairy tale with a modern moral.
Cursed since birth by her well-meaning but shortsighted fairy godmother, who gave her the magical "gift" of obedience, teenage Ella (Anne Hathaway) must do whatever anyone orders. This not only leads to literal interpretations of offhand commands ("Hold your tongue," for example), but gets Ella in serious trouble when her widowed father remarries, bringing Ella a cruel stepmother and two even crueler stepsisters.
As soon as the stepsisters find out why Ella is so obedient, they force her to shoplift from the village mall and renounce her best friend. Ella runs away from home, looking for her godmother in the hopes that she will be able to break the spell.
There's a handsome prince involved, too, although Ella is less smitten with him than are the other young women. Ella associates the prince with the policies of his wicked uncle, who oppresses the kingdom's elves, giants and ogres.
"Ella Enchanted" is an old-fashioned movie, in the best possible sense. As Ella, Hathaway exudes a goofy, squeaky-clean charm. Even the film's special effects feel charmingly antiquated. This tone is just right for the project, which in its espousal of tolerance for others and personal freedom seems like a classic movie from the 1930s.
"Ella Enchanted" doesn't look slick, but in its innocence, sweet heart and abundant wit, it has more going for it than a dozen blockbusters. |
