Vikings have long had a reputation as barbarians. Because they did not develop writing, much of their history comes from British and French clergy 一 the very people they attacked.

The only written monuments of the Vikings themselves are some 3,500 runic inscriptions in Sweden, mostly written on stone, which are laconic and not very informative.

"Viking" means "pirate," some scholars say; others, that it refers to people from the Viken (the old name for Norway's Oslo Fjord).

The Vikings are best known for their sea voyages 一 to Western Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and North America. By way of the Russian rivers, they reached Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) and beyond to Baghdad in Asia. They crossed the Atlantic to Iceland, Greenland and North America. Experts agree that the Vikings landed in Newfoundland, Canada, which they named Vinland.
