When you learned that the Chinese language contained loads of these weird characters known as measure words (量词), how did you feel? Does ‘Argh!!!!!’ describe the feeling accurately? If you were like us you might have come to China (or Taiwan) thinking you could get away with just using 个. When you got here though you soon realised 个 just wouldn't cut it. So to try and help we thought we'd create a list of 10 of the most common measure words.
Note about measure words
If you have not quite got your head around measure words yet don’t worry too much as they are not too difficult to grasp. They function a little like English collective nouns always occurring between this/that/numbers and the noun. They are also descriptive. Like in English we might say: ‘A piece of bread’, or ‘a pile of socks’ – in this context piece or pile are similar to Chinese measure words. However they do differ from place to place and person to person so this list is by no means absolute or exhaustive.

The measure word list (and lots of example sentences)
1. 个
Main uses: people, individual items (use it if you don't know the proper measure word)
Example 1: 那个东西是什么?- What is that thing?
Example 2: 一共有八个人 – In total there are 8 people

2. 张
Main uses: flat thin objects (from tables and beds, to CDs and photographs, to paper and tickets)
Example 1: 两张火车票 – 2 train tickets
Example 2: 每一张DVD是5块 – Each DVD is 5 Yuan

3. 部
Main uses: fairly random things such as cars, films, phones
Example 1: 我的朋友刚才买一部汽车 – My friend has just bought a car

4. 只
Main uses: most animals, one of a pair (hand, eye, shoe, glove etc)
Example 1: 我的姐姐有两只猫 – My sister has 2 cats

5. 本
Main uses: bound printed stuff (books, magazines, pads etc)
Example 1: 这本书不好看 – This book isn't any good
Example 2: 那本杂志太贵了 – That magazine is too expensive

6. 台
Main uses: most bigger appliances (computers, televisions, pianos etc)
Example 1: 如果你买两台电视他们可能给你优惠 – If you buy 2 televisions then they may give you a discount

7. 条
Main uses: long thin objects (from fish, to rivers, to trousers!)
Example 1: 这条河叫什么名字?- What's the name of this river?
Example 2: 这条裤子太短了 – These trousers are too short

8. 块
Main uses: pieces or lumps of things (bread, cake, meat, stone etc)
Example 1: 一块蛋糕多少钱?- How much is one piece of cake?

9. 件
Main uses: matters, clothes
Example 1: 这件事情怎么处理好呢?- How can we sort this (matter) out?
Example 2: 哎呀,我的妻子买了一百件多衣服!- Oh no, my wife has bought over 100 items of clothing!

10. 杯
Main uses: cup or glass of something (interesting a cup is a 杯子 and its measure word is 个)
Example 1: 再来一杯啤酒 – bring us another (literally: one more) beer

Yeah, okay so we lied, measures arent that easy to grasp! Haha, just joking, you'll be fine. We think the above 10 are all fairly useful and come up quite regularly so maybe start with these and just keep slowing adding to your collection. Don't become a 个 junkie!

我来说两句
