爱思英语网《林浩洋专栏》2011年7月04日正式开栏
大约在2000年左右，中国以及中国文化迷住了我们两位英国哥们儿。我们对中国语言和文化做了十年的专心学习和研究，但还是觉得自己对这个文化丰富的国家只有一点点的了解。
目前我们分别住在中国一南一北的两个大城市，看到在中国英语的一些应用情况，我们下定决心与中国朋友共同来提高这里的英文应用水平，尤其是书面语。我们最近的项目涉及到医药，媒体以及纺织等行业，他们为这些行业内公司提供了翻译和校对服务。在2008年北京奥运会前几个月，我们也参与了中国铁道部的一个大型项目，包括翻译和校对全国各地火车站标牌。

Just because learning Chinese characters isn't difficult enough, somebody somewhere along the language evolvement way decided to not only assign different tonal values to the same character but also for some characters completely different pronunciations. These characters are called 多音字 (many-tone-character). We thought we'd write a list of some of the most common.

This list is composed of Chinese Mandarin speech particles that often could be omitted whilst the sentence still understood. That is not to say though that they are useless, quite the opposite, these sounds add flavour, context, and a depth of meaning.

Another lovely vague Chinese word. Nciku gives 14 definitions and Pleco gives it 16! Why oh why? Anyway, enough moaning. 开 is generally used in reference to the opening or starting of something. The following list should hopefully help you to get the essence of 开.

10 Things you can 发 in Chinese
The individual character 发 conveys the idea of sending, expressing, distributing or emitting something out. Nice and precise then. However if you can get the general idea or feeling behind 发 then the things you can 发 make more sense and are possibly easier to remember.

In some ways this is the most interesting of the list as the Chinese name is the opposite of the English. It means 'Don't lie to me'. As for the reason why the translators chose to alter the meaning, we're not really sure!

10 Things you can 上 in Chinese
The Chinese seem to love verb objects. They can't get enough of them. They 读 their 书's, 跳 their 舞's and 吃 their 苦's. So in the same verb object spirit we've prepared a list of 10 things you can 上 in Chinese. We hope it may prove useful and help you learn a few words you didn't know before. Some are easy and some more difficult, so like Marty McFly says in Back to the Future – "watch out for the changes and try to keep up".
