大雪无痕07日期:2007-11-09 12:23:42 点击: 作者: 来源:At around four o’clock in the afternoon, the group of specialists from the Public Security Ministry, arrived at the Lai Feng Manor in three advanced Lexus cars preceded a police car. They were accompanied by the main leaders at Provincial level. There had been another ten police cars being parked at the gate and each entrance was guarded by policemen with dogs. The atmosphere was very tense. Vice-Director Ma, on behalf of the Municipal Public Security Bureau, reported to the specialists what they had approximately mastered. What the murderer used was a home-made pistol-56. Judging from the bullet and shell case found on the spot, the pistol was not under the overall control of the nation, so the sources would have to be further investigated. The murderer fired three shots, only one of which had hit the vital part. With such a short distance but only one shot hitting the vital part, the murderer was probably a new hand and rather nervous when shooting. He was in his thirty’s or forty’s and about one meter seventy to seventy-five tall. His right leg was once wounded or was aching at hat time. He was wearing a pair of leather shoes with rubber bottoms produced in “Is there any passageway under the ground?” asked a specialist after a moment of silence. Ma said, “Only a small basement. No passageway under the ground. The basement had already collapsed. And after a careful examination, there were no dubious footsteps found there.” There was another period of silence. A second specialist asked, “Since it was covered by heavy snow all round, how was it possible for the murderer to escape without leaving any trace? Was it sowing hard when the case took place?” “It was snowing hard.” answered Guo Qiang, who was very familiar to the specialists. They asked him straightforward, “The footsteps could possibly be covered by heavy snow?’ Guo explained, “At that time, we were on duty only two hundred meters from the spot. And we rushed to the spot as soon as we heard the gunshot. It took us only one or two minutes. Within such a short time, no heavy snow could have covered all the traces.” Ma went on explaining, “I guess there are two reasons for the footsteps to be destroyed. First, some odd-job men were constantly clearing the snow on the spot. Second, the footsteps were mixed up with those left by the squad of policemen on duty who rushed over at the gunshot.” The specialist continued top ask, “Without finding the murderers’ footsteps, how could you judge his age and height and conclude he was wearing a pair of leather shoes with rubber bottoms?” Guo explained, “An odd-job man told me about that. He said that twenty minutes before the case, a man brought Secretary Zhang to the villa behind.” “Oh, is there a witness? It is so important!” The specialists got excited, “Is that man the inner circle or not?” Guo said, “The witness said he hadn’t paid any attention to it.” “The witnessing odd-job man has noticed the details about what shoes the stranger was wearing, but has failed to spot whether he was from the inner circle. It sounds incredible.” A specialist put forwards his doubts. “Investigate the odd-job-man. If there are no other questions, let him identify the people in the inner circle. Judging from what you talked about, the murderer is probably from the inner circle.” A specialist proposed. Guo answered quickly, “OK!” On the way to the spot, a specialist suddenly asked, “Where’s Fang Yulin? How has he been absent today?” These specialists had once contacted with the “May 25th” Task Force and had a profound impression about Fang. Guo looked at Ma and said, “He…” Ma said, “He has been transferred …” A specialist hurried to ask, “Is he not in the Crime Investigating Brigade any more?” Ma replied, “No.” A specialist asked, “What’s the matter?” Ma replied, “Nothing wrong really. It is just a temporary adjusting for the sake of work.” The specialist smiled. “Has he made you leaders awkward or irritated? The young man is good at crime investigating. We’ll use him if you leave him aside.” Ma shook his head and said, “You have already gathered a lot of talented people. Anyone can be counted as NO. 1 specialist, so leave a couple of capable men for us in the grass-roots.” At this moment, Fang was investigating anew the deserted villa. No one had asked him to come, but he would never believe that the traces left by the murderer should have vanished in the air. After a while, a member of the Crime Investigating Brigade, who had been keeping watch outside, came and told him of Ma’s arrival. Fang turned off his flashlight at once. The man in the Criminal Investigating Brigade asked him anxiously, “Have you found something after a second examination?” Fang said, “Let’s go back and talk in detail.” Then he hurried to an old jeep parked behind the grove. At this time, Ma was approaching the villa with those specialists. They had noticed the jeep slowly leaving the manor, but it was too dark for them to see clearly who was driving it. A specialist asked, “Where is the jeep from?” Guo hurried to explained, “It’s a jeep of our brigade. The alien cars are forbidden to come in. All the entrances have been blocked.” The specialists reassured themselves. But Ma stared at Guo hard. Ma seemed to have guessed who was ‘slipping’ here in a jeep of the brigade. He had thought that Guo must know about it. However, Guo pretended not to understand his eye expressions. He turned and led the way for the specialists. At this time, Ma’s mobile-phone rang, which stopped him from further inquiring them of the matter. After Ma answered the call, he told the specialists that Secretary Sun from the Provincial Disciple Inspecting Commission would inform them of a very important background message concerning the case. So they got on the car and hurried to the Commission. Secretary Sun had been in a somewhat outmoded meeting-room of the Commission building. The Provincial Disciple Inspecting Commission was still handling affairs in an old four-story green building behind the main yard of the Party Provincial Committee. The cement floors of its passageways were humid all the year round. After Secretary Sun shook hands with the specialists in return, he beckoned Ma and uttered something. Ma then said something to Guo. Guo hurried went out with his notebook. After that, Secretary Sun sent his own secretaries away, leaving Ma and the specialists inside the meeting-room. “For the need of solving the case, the Provincial Anti-Corruption Group asks me to inform you of something. Because it may be related to some officials at the Municipal or Provincial level, it will be strictly limited within a very small range. Everyone present are not allowed to record or spread…” Sun’s remarks were brief and clear, but the atmosphere got much tenser. Ma and the specialists laid down their notebooks at once and listened attentively. “In investigating the “May 25th” Case, I have contacted with the super-giant state-owned enterprise of your provinces, which is quite known all over the country— Eastern Steel Company. Twenty days ago, someone wrote to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Leading Group and claimed that the company had once bribed some leaders at Municipal and Provincial levels with three hundred internal shares for its workers. Secretary Zzhung of the Party Provincial Committee is attaching much importance to this matter. After the discussion of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Leading Group, it has been decided that the case be investigated by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Bureau. On the day when the Task Force arrived at the company, that is, at three o’clock on the afternoon of Dec. 16th, three main leaders of the Eastern Steel Company came to the guest house and explained the whole story the head of the Task Force. They said they had encountered great difficulties in the reform of the Eastern Steel Company, and were eager to get an extra support from the Municipal and Provincial leaders concerned, so they decided collectively to offer bribery to some leaders. Being leaders themselves for so many years, they knew what it meant to them as well as to the Municipal and Provincial leaders in case the matter was exposed. So it has to be done very secretly. They took it for granted that it was secure to entrust a vice-arbiter with this matter. No one else was allowed to intervene. In case of being exposed, the responsibility would be assumed collectively. They had also signed a contract with this vice-arbiter. Therefore, no one else knows how many of the original shares were sent, to whom they were sent or whether they had been accepted or rejected. Only the vice-arbiter knows it. His name is Xiong Fuping… He is fifty-eight years old. He came to serve as a boiler worker at the age of seventeen, and joined the Communist Party at the age of nineteen. He is the only leader in the Eastern Steel Company who has been promoted step by step from the workers’ background. On the day when the Task Force arrived, he wasn’t there. He was in NO.ⅠPeople’s Hospital of the Province for treating his heart attack. Knowing this and asking the permission from the doctors, the Task Force sent him back to the Eastern Steel Company in a special car and contacted with him for the first time that morning. When the Task Force was trying to persuade him to tell the truth, he, being over-burdened on the mind, had a sudden relapse of his heart disease and had to be sent back to the hospital…” “Not dead?” Ma asked. “Nearly died. I myself sent him to the hospital and ordered them to try every means to save his life. After his disease was alleviated, he proposed to see me. He told me that he worried very much when he was assigned with the task of sending internal shares. He feared that if it was he alone who sent the shares, those leaders who accepted them would deny it in case that the case be exposed, so that he couldn’t explain it clearly and his future would be ruined. On the other hand, he himself is an honest person. He is not quite familiar with the leaders as he hasn’t frequently contacted with them often. Though it is not complex to send shares to the leaders, it is not so simple either. To whom will the shares be sent? How about his and his wife’s temper? Who’ll often be at his home? How to make him accept the shares at ease? The answers to all these questions should be accurately worked out and even the slightest ambiguity is not allowed. So he asked Secretary Zhang to help him. Zhang is the son of a worker of the Eastern Steel Company. His father was in charge of constructing this company after being transferred from the An Steel Company. So their family members are cherishing a deep affection for the Eastern Steel Company… Xiong thought that in case of being exposed, Secretary Zhang could provide circumstantial evidence that the three thousand shares were not completely swallowed up by him. Later, these shares were really passed on to those leaders by Secretary Zhang.” A specialist asked, “Have you talked with Secretary Zhang?” Secretary said, “According to the original plan, we would have talked with him on the night of the 18th, that is, last night after the party at the Lai Feng Manor. We have secretly supervised him so as to avoid accidents. One of the reasons why we had deployed so many policemen at the Lai Feng Manor was to supervise him in an open or secret way. We have even deployed some policemen in ordinary clothes. For example, we had arranged some members of the Discipline Inspecting Committee in the chorus. We had though it was absolutely secure; however, the case took place at last. “Do you think that murder of Secretary Zhang is related to the case about the shares? Was the murderer trying to do away with the witness?” “The conclusion should be drawn of course after an investigation. But we think that the two cases are closely related because Secretary Zhang had once got involved in the matter of the Eastern Steel Company’s shares and was later murdered one or two hours before the Organization was about to talk with him.” “How is Xiong Fuping now?” “He was in a coma again on the noon of the 16th and had been rescued until he came around last night. But with myocardial infarction, he is still seriously ill, so the doctors forbid anyone to talk with him. However, we have taken the strictest measures and are ready to transfer him to a hospital of some group army headquarters.” “We can never allow even the slightest slip with Xiong, for only he knows the possible clues…” Ma hurriedly asked, “Need we send someone to escort him?” Sun said, “No. this transfer was done by the Group Army Headquarters. It would be done by their own men and cars.” He looked at his watch and said, “If nothing unusual, they have already set off.” The phone in the office suddenly rang. All the people were taken aback. Secretary Zhang seemed to have foreseen something. He picked up the phone with a stern look. It was from a comrade in the hospital sent by the Task Force. He said their car was blocked halfway by a peasant motorcade which was carrying vegetables from the suburban area to the city proper. It had been delayed about ten minutes. Sun asked, “Nothing else?” “Nothing. If nothing unexpected happens, we can get out of here in fifteen minutes.” The man reported at the other end of the line. Sun relaxed a little and said, “When you start and arrive, please report it to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Leading Group and Vice-Secretary Gu respectively. They are all waiting at the phone.” Gu was Vice-Secretary of the Party Provincial Committee. Before Secretary Zzhung Huan went to Hainan for a treatment, he made it clear at the Standing Committee Meeting that during this period, Vice-Secretary Gu would act as head of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Leading Group and be in charge of its routine work. At this moment, a comrade in the Task Force cried out in fear. It was because the doctor at the Emergency Room hurriedly reported to him that Xiong, lying in the special yard, got suddenly worsened in his health.” “Tell the hospital leaders to save him by all means. And pay special attention to securities so as to avoid other accidents. Hurry!” Sun ordered loudly. But the rescue was over when Sun arrived. Sun revealed the white quilt covering Xiong’s face. Though Xiong had stopped breathing, he was still half opening his eyes and wearing a shocked and regretful expression, which appeared rather rigid against the lamplight. Sun sighed slightly and helped Xiong close his eyes. Fearing that Xiong might have died of other causes, Sun asked Ma to inform the legal medical experts to examine his body. But it proved that Xiong really died of myocardial infarction. “I should be responsible for Xiong’s death. I was too rash in my decision. Xiong’s heart was not good all the time, and he was in hospital for two month last year. So more serious measures should have been taken as his heart could possibly stand no shocks… Now it has made the case more difficult to be solved, for the two possible people knowing the inside stories have both died.” Sun rebuked himself as he reported it to Vice-Secretary Gu. “Yes, it’s troublesome.” Vice-Secretary Gu heaved a deep sigh and said, “However, there is always something unpredictable. It may be God’s will. We cannot get perfect results even with perfect pursuits.” Then he asked his secretary, “Have you got though with Secretary Zzhung?” Vice-Secretary Gu was about to fly to Hainan and reported the knotty matters to Secretary Zzhung. “It is unnecessary that you go to Hainan personally. Zzhung has made it clear that it is mainly up to you to handle daily work of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Leading Group when he is absent here.” Secretary Sun asked with care. He knew that Vice-Secretary Gu hated people bypassing him and reporting things directly to Zzhung. “I’m only a deputy. Such an important matter should be reported to him.” Gu said slightly. At this time, his secretary told him that the telephone had been put through, but the hospital leaders didn’t allow Secretary Zzhung to listen to their report. They said Zzhung was still unstable in his health and should be waiting until this course of treatment was over. It he had recovered basically then, he might work one or two hours a day. “Then let’s discuss it first and report the result to him.” Ma proposed, “There is one more thing we should complete quickly. I estimate that Xiong and Secretary Zhang may leave some memo secretly, in which is recorded to whom those internal shares have been sent. Need we send someone at once to search his homes and offices?” Secretary Sun responded quickly, “I see it’s OK. What’s your opinion, Vice-Secretary Gu?” Gu only said briefly, “These technological things are up to you.” So Sun said to Ma, “OK, let’s take action at once. Inform the Anti-Corruption Bureau to send someone here.” However, they acquired nothing after a night’s search. |
