There was no sign about the later accident that day. Ding Jie’s father had just retired of Commander-in-Chief in a large military region and decided to settle down in the Provincial capital. In the evening the main leaders at Municipal and Provincial levels, who were enthusiastic and intelligent, intentionally held a small party for the resigned industrious and prestigious commander, in the carefully-chosen Lai Feng Manor which was both famous and quiet. Despite a small party, the security measures were strictly taken, for the main leaders would be present. Prior to that day, the Municipal Government Secretary-General Zhou Mi, who was in charge of this party, had brought his competent staff members there and the members of the Political Security Section of the Municipal Public Security Bureau had taken strict measures ensuring the security of the manor. On the evening, a well-trained element locked all the entrances to the manor and the outpost was stationed merely five or six hundred meters away from the manor. There were only two things beyond Ding’s expectation that day. One was that the weather station had failed to forecast a heavy snow. It was violent with big flakes swirling, pushing and shoveling in the wind, like numerous fuzzy spirits. The cloudy sky seemed to be pulled down. However, heavy snow, fierce wind and cloudy sky are ordinary things in this Northern soil in winter rather than signs of an accident, as would probably be consented by all except the policemen. The other thing that she felt unexpected and even a little distressed about was her blunt encounter with Fang Yulin on the path to the Lai Feng Manor. Fang was her desk-mate in middle school. They too spent their time in the same law college. There was something peculiar to a northern man in Fang’s qualities which Ding appreciated most. He was persistent, fervent and had the guts to take initiatives. Fang’s father was also a solider. (Of course, it should be clarified that his position was nothing compared with Commander Ding. In contemporary words, he was only a junior soldier. Even at his most ‘brilliant’ moment, he only served as Deputy Head of the Guards Platoon in the military headquarters and remained in this position until he retired.) Therefore, Fang and Ding had been close to each other since their childhood. It should be specially mentioned that Ding was a little more active. One reason may be that girls always appear more mature and intelligent than boys of the similar age. Therefore, Fang was just a ‘silly’ boy though ranking vice-monitor in his middle teens. He knew nothing besides denote himself to collective activities. Ding Jie, as monitor, however, knew how to show ‘sympathy’ and ‘care’ to her capable assistant when she ‘exploited’ and ‘directed’ him. Of course, in those years, the ‘silly’ boy Fang Yulin had always failed to sense the implication behind Ding’s ‘sympathy’ and ‘care’ and so they were taken as a matter of course. Ding, nevertheless, took Fang’s ‘stupidity’ as ‘honesty’ and ‘simplicity’ and felt even more strongly that he was dependable. All this in turn intensified her instinctive ‘sympathy’. She always tried to ‘protect’ him, which often embarrassed Fang. After graduation from college, Fang, who had been longing to become a criminal policeman, realized his dream while Ding, who was born more tenacious, continued to obtain her master’s degree in economic management. The hard-working Fang later became vice-head of the Municipal Severe Case Brigade step by step. Ding, after working two years in the Economic Department of the TV Station, became Director of the New Department, which surprised a lot of people familiar with her. However, it was quite reasonable after a careful consideration. They had both reached the age of late 20s. Great accomplishments in careers they may not have achieved, they lived a steady life and had a bright future, so it was time for them to consider their love affairs. In actuality their relationship had once been so intimate. However, there was a little tension between them over the past year. The reason was with the ‘silly’ boy Fang Yulin. For some unknown reason (ding always has her antipathy for Fang’s hesitance in speech. If you meet some trouble, blurt it out. Why are you in such a melancholy mood?), this ‘silly’ boy showed neither friendliness nor aloofness. She knew that he was severely punished recently for grave case called ‘May 25th’ by members in his inner circle. At a criminal moment of the handling, he was ordered to stop investigating several suspects relevant to the case. Instead of obeying the order, the ‘silly’ boy strived to instruct his men to go on the investigation. Thus, he was relieved of vice-head of the Severe Case Brigade for his violation of the discipline in detection and was transferred to the traffic Police Squadron to direct traffic in the street. It was unexpected that he was also on guard in the Lai Feng Manor that day. Turning round in its path, the Audi was rushing to the manor gate down the slope through the heavy snow which had prevented a single soul to be seen even five meters away, when Fang stood out and stopped it. “Credential, please.” Fang shouted to the car in a formal way. Seeing him, Ding got irritated and shouted from behind, “Fang Yulin, what are you going to do? My father is on the car.” Fang was wearing an old cotton-padded police uniform tightly, with its cap covered with a thick layer of flakes. He was a tall thin guy, with brown skins. His appearance seemed a little strange, with two big bones rising high out of his somewhat flat face, quite resembling two ancient Mongolian imperial graves in the Alacudac Prairie. Each witness knows that these graves are built with black cobbles with no tombstone or any decorative patterns concerning the imperials. Their primitiveness and simplicity are made by nature. However, pressed by the setting sun, they will slightly reveal the misery and hardship of the past. Ding got more irritated. Seeing that Fang was just finding faults wither, she cast a hard glance at him and cried, “You don’t know my father?” “I’ve been ordered to check credentials about each car and person passing by.” “What’s the order for? It’s for the security of my father and other leaders! But now my father is just on the car!” If Commander Ding hadn’t come to intercede, Ding would never have forgiven Fang. Commander Ding patted her on the shoulder to stop her arguing while at the same time from the back seat he said smilingly to Fang who was still standing straight in the snow. “Xiao Fang, what do I have to do? I really haven’t brought any credential with me today. In ordinary times, these small things are all kept by the policemen and secretaries. However, none of them are coming today…” He smiled casually. At this time, the head of the Traffic Police Squadron hurried over with two soldiers, pushed Fang aside rudely and scolded him, “Fang, what do you think you are doing? Don’t get in the way.” Then he bent to salute to Commander Ding in the car and explained with a flushed face, “Sorry, Commander, he is a new comer in our squadron, still unfamiliar with political affairs. Please!” Ding closed the door angrily. The Audi started at a low speed. The head and other soldiers of the Traffic Police Squadron all saluted solemnly to Commander Ding. Fang, although saluting, wore an obviously defiant and bantering expression. The car drove by steadily. Disturbed by Fang, Ding’s original good feelings in spending a happy night in the manor was seriously affected. Even so, she never expected that in a few minutes, in such a strictly-offended manor should a shooting case have occurred. The graveness of the case startled not only the whole Provincial capital, but also Zhongnanhai (the Central and |
