Remember when the term "wireless" referred to that new fangle, AM radio? No? Me neither. Ask your grandfather. But today wireless ranges from making a call on your cell-phone, to connecting all your gadgets with Bluetooth Technology, even surfing the web on a PDA. All that and more is part of a high-stakes industry gathering here in Las Vegas. No surprise wireless handsets nearly outnumbers slot machines when the CTIA, the Cellular Teller-Communications and Internet Association comes to Las Vegas, but these high rollers, after suffering through the high-tech bust, are optimistic that new toys and technology will attract new business.

TOM WHEELER, PRESIDENT, CTIA
There is a real trend that is developing. Wireless data is now here and it's alive.

Wireless data-like SMS Short Message Service, tapping a few words into your cell phone and zapping them into another cell-phone, kind of like passing notes in high school.
TOM WHEELER
June 2001, there were 30,000 SMS messages sent in all the United States for the whole month. Last June, June 2002, one year later, there was one billion SMS messages sent.

And wireless data like photos ("This little device goes here."), taken on your digital cell-phone.

You are looking really good, James. Okay.

Which can also be wirelessly connected to an earpiece for hands-free talking by a technology called Bluetooth.
TOM WHEELER
There is a very low power radio link that's going from here to the phone, and then going out on the wireless network from the phone.

Even a security watch for kids which uses a cellular signal and satellites to let parents find them via the Internet, a tracker , complete with panic buttons.
TOM WHEELER
He punches those two buttons and immediately calls for help.

What about wireless shopping? This device tallies up your items, no need for a checkout stand.
TOM WHEELER
I show you. Slip your credit card, and it will charge it off. Everything goes out wirelessly.

Plus digital content like games and music are just a cell phone away, all for a small fee, of course. This is one tech industry not singing the Blues, according to the CTIA, per user revenues continue to rise for phones. For new data services, they've doubled over the last year.
TOM WHEELER
So consumers are saying, I want this. I want to be able do more than just talk into my phone.
