The state of California still leads the nation in air pollution. California is improving its efforts to cut auto emissions, that's spearheading an unusual trend in Southern California. A status symbol of anything but a high-performance vehicle. Peter Viles has the report.

VILES
The car is the mild-mannered Toyota Prius, a so-called Hybrid. Fifty-two miles per gallon and you don't have to plug it in or charge it up. It runs on both gas and electric power. And in the race to develop mass-produced, low-emissions cars, Honda and Toyota are winning with hybrids. Hopes for fully electric vehicles, like this one owned by the U.S. Navy, have faded because electric cars are expensive and you're constantly charging them. Detroit is developing hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles, but they are years away from mass production. Which leaves hybrids, which are not cheap, either. The Prius is smaller than the Toyota Corolla, which you can buy for under $14,000. The Prius sells for close to 21,000 and doesn't really stand out in a crowd.
