Olympic flame arrives in Beijing

BEIJING, China (AP) -- The torch for the 2004 Athens Olympics has arrived in Beijing, China.
中国，北京----2004雅典奥运会火炬已抵达中国北京。

It is the flame's fifth stop in its 78,000-kilometer (46,800-mile) journey across six continents, 27 countries and 33 cities.

The Beijing relay will begin Wednesday from the Great Hall of the People in the center of the capital, which will host the 2008 Olympics.

From there it will pass historic sites such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven on the 50-kilometer (31-mile) route which ends at the Summer Palace, the former imperial resort in the city's northwest.

Chinese NBA star Yao Ming will carry the torch to ignite a ceremonial cauldron before a celebration at the palace, organizers said.He is one of 148 bearers in the Beijing segment.

Other scheduled torchbearers include former Olympic table tennis champion Deng

Yaping and gymnast Sang Lan, who was paralyzed from the waist down in a fall.

The flame is to travel to New Delhi, India next next.
