Afghan Interim Administration Emerges

The man chosen to head a new, interim administration in Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, says his priority is to bring peace and prosperity to his people. He was speaking after delegates at the UN-sponsored conference in Germany reached a deal on Afghanistan’s political future. The interim administration is to take power in just over two weeks. Northern Alliance troops will pull out of Kabul, perhaps making way for a UN-sponsored, multi-national force. The transitional government will last for six months. A traditional grand council will then elect a new government to rule for two years. And a new constitution and democratic elections should follow.
