Russia Mulls Oil Cuts
Now waiting on a decision, the Russian government is meeting with the heads of several oil companies this morning, and speculation is growing that Russia will agree to cut oil output and help OPEC boost prices. Norway, which like Russia, is not an OPEC member agreed to cut as much as two hundred thousand barrels a day on Wednesday, provided Russia also squeezes production. If Russia follows Norway, it will be a political coup for OPEC, which refuses to reduce its global oil output unless non-OPEC producers make similar sacrifices.
Gary Ross (Oil Industry): If you look over the last three years what has happened is non-OPEC supplies have gone up three million barrels a day, of which almost half has been Russia alone, and demand has only grown by a million. In order to balance the market, that has forced OPEC to cut production two million a day, and essentially they are tired of doing it all by themselves. They’e looking for some small non-OPEC assistance, and if they get this small non-OPEC assistance you’e talking about significantly higher prices than we see today.
Well, oil prices suffered sharp declines last week and fell to a two year low on Monday after OPEC ministers made their appeal to other producers to trim output. But in London Brent Crude is now back to just under twenty dollars a barrel, that’s on expectations of course Moscow will cooperate.
